Felds (Nemocyon dimus; also Dimore DEE-moh-rə (SG Dimo DEE-moh)) (Phyrean: Fwyl; Callidian: Timo; Cl. Nanai: kaX) are one of two sapient species present on World, the other being clúnydd. They are the most abundant species of canid. They are bipedal, on account of their historical tree-dwelling making their anterior limbs into graspers. They are theorised to have originated in southern Anidon around 50 000 BNB.

Name

Feld is derived from Phyrean fwyl, the name of the species in the language. The scientific name of their genus, Nemocyon, is derived from Ancient Greek nemo-, meaning "tree," and kyon, meaning "dog." Dimo is derived from timo, the word for feld in Callidian.

Appearance

Head

The head of a feld is noticeably similar to that of other canids. They have a protruding snout of variable length, and big ears that may either stand straight, hang or bend. Their nose is free of fur and covered in rough skin. Differently from their sister clade, the canines, they possess very noticeable, flexible eyebrows used mainly in emoting. Some ethnic groups present a mane that may cover the top of the head, the nape and/or the neck.

Body

Felds are elmiforms, and therefore they walk upright on their hind limbs, with their front limbs being used to grasp and manipulate their environment. They possess a tail used in emoting.

Fur

Feld fur is highly varied and comes in several different patterns. It presents colours ranging between whites, blacks, greys and browns. Some spots that receive higher hormonal response have the undercoat grow over the main coat. These spots are considered secondary sexual characteristic or SSC fur, and are tendentially more noticeable in males. Manes are considered SSC fur as well. These spots may appear anywhere on the body and usually depend on ethnic group, but most commonly they concentrate on the mane, snout, arms, legs and genital area.

Eye colour

The most common eye colours in felds are, by far, various shades of brown and amber. Blue and green are recessive and thus rarer, but still prolific in the general population.

Evolution

Felds are the only extant member of genus Nemocyon, part of the subfamily Nemocyoninae, a sister clade to canines (wolves, dogs, jackals, coyotes...), and located under the family of canids. They share their subfamily with the lesser tree dogs, genus Parvocyon, their closest extant relatives.

Biology

Blood and respiration

Felds, like most animals on World, use haemoglobin as their blood oxygen carrier, rendering their blood crimson red.

Diet and digestion

A feld's diet is vast and diverse, having diverged from their ancestral carnivory into a more generalised omnivory. Realistically, a feld might be able to subsist on a vegetarian diet, although fully vegan diets are more difficult to maintain. Animal-derived products contribute greatly to a balanced feld diet, and replacing these can often prove challenging.

Reproduction and ageing

Felds possess genitalia similar to those of other canids: males have penises possessing a bulbus glandis and a penile sheath, into which the penis itself retracts when unaroused; females possess a triangular or teardrop-shaped vulva, with a long vaginal canal that leads into the cervix, beyond which lies the uterus. Males possess testes contained in a scrotum, while females possess ovaries that lie inside their body, at either side of the uterus.

Gestation lasts around 310 World days (~279 Earth days). Felds tend to have one or two children per pregnancy; more have been recorded, but higher numbers of offspring are exceedingly rare. Being mammals, felds possess two teats that produce milk rich in lactose.

Cross-culturally, felds are considered infants from birth to 4, children from 5 to 12, adolescents from 13 to 18, adults from 19 to 50, and elderly onwards. Sexual maturity is reached around mid-to-late teens, and brain development completes at around 28 years of age.
