Paons or Pʼaons (Áonak: pʼaon /pʼao̯n/) are aquatic, fish-like photodermates. They populate nearly every body of water on planet Elm. Despite being considered a single category of lifeform, they comprise multiple classes, all under phylum Photodermata. They are distinguished by their streamlined body plans, fins, and the photodermal patch characteristic of photodermates. Some (usually) benthic species, particularly those under genus Anops, have foregone their complex bilateral eyes altogether, only making use of their photodermal patch for basic recognition of changes in light.
