Gwelmwy ("towers" in Phyrean) is a two-player abstract board game originating from Nemmark. It is played on an 8x8 board with the corner tiles removed.

Gameplay

Objective

The objective of the game is capturing the opponent's towers. If a player is left with no towers or is only left with one man, they lose.

Movement

Towers

The towers (gwelmwy, singular gwelm) remain immobile. They will be removed from the board when they are captured.

Men

The men (tewfyn(wr) "soldier(s)") ride orthogonally, and capture by putting two of each other on opposite orthogonal sides of a piece.

Rules

  1. White begins.
  2. Multi-capturing is allowed.
  3. Putting a piece between two opponent pieces is disallowed as it would result in an immediate capture.
  4. However, putting a piece between two opponent pieces is allowed if there's an opportunity for capture.
  5. Pieces can also be captured in an event where they have no more legal moves, such as being trapped in a corner.
  6. Towers are colour-agnostic and can be used to capture by either player.
  7. A game where there are no productive valid moves left (i.e. capturing moves) ends in either a draw if none of the towers have been captured, or a loss for the player with the least towers.
