Ryumun (Teelian IPA: [ɾjuˈmun]) is an abstract strategy board game in the juhsung family, specifically a descendant of lhu fum, with which it shares many similarities. Like other games in this family, the objective is to bare or humble (checkmate) the general. Nowadays the making of lyumun tiles is considered an art form, and special care is given to the tile of the general.

Setup

Ryumun is played on an 8×8 board, with the players facing each other. The opposite first three ranks are reserved for the starting positions of the pieces. These starting positions are identical to the ones in Lhŭ fũm. In order, from white's perspective:

  • First rank: archer-chariot-sergeant-general-minister-sergeant-chariot-archer.
  • Second rank: blank-flanker-blank-blank-blank-blank-flanker-blank.
  • Third rank: populated entirely by soldiers.

Black's side is near-identical with the general and minister swapped so as to have both generals facing each other on the same file.

Rules

Pieces

General

The general (kainu) moves the same as in lhu fum, that is, one tile in any direction.

Minister

The minister (kashi) innovates on the lhu fum minister in that its movement pattern is solely comprised of 1,2 hippogonal leaps.

Flanker

The flanker (töna) moves one tile diagonally. It promotes to the marshal.

Sergeant

The sergeant (kowei) moves one tile orthogonally. It promotes to the marshal.

Archer

The archer (tsun) rides diagonally. It promotes to the golden archer (tsun zoun), which, in addition to its normal movement pattern, may also move one tile orthogonally.

Chariot

The chariot (hisa) rides orthogonally. It promotes to the golden chariot (hisa zoun), which may also move one tile diagonally.

Soldier

The soldier (yaka) moves one tile forward. Once it has left its initial position, it may capture one tile along its same rank. It promotes to the marshal

Marshal

The marshal (guma) is the promoted form of the sergeant, flanker and soldier. It moves one tile in any direction, like the general.
