Regal brooch

Regal or royal brooches are generational pieces of apparel used as status symbols by avannian monarchies. They are brooches meant to fasten the capes of members of royalty, and are adorned with jewels. The amrhylian, bluehander and hogharrhyan brooches are made of gold, while the hearnish brooches are made of brass.

Origin

Brooches as apparel in Phyrea have been used since prehistory, the earliest ones dating from around the 1700s BNB. Their use as status symbols predates the concept of royal brooches: noblemen showed off their wealth by adorning their brooches with patterns and jewels. Around 800 ANB, the first royal brooch would be made in Hearn, but the mainland wouldn't catch on until 1102, when the amrhylian king's brooch was made. The rest of the brooches soon followed, and they remain in use today, being passed on with each generation of regents, consorts and heirs.

Use

Royal brooches are exclusively used by the monarchy. There is usually one for the regent, one for their consort, one for the heir apparent, and several for the rest of the princes(ses). The only one to not follow this convention is the monarchy of Hearn, where the regent and consort have a pair of brooches that are copies of each other.
