Nam (Bahlian for "escape") is an abstract strategy board game originating from Nanghung.

Gameplay

There are two ways of playing this game: Moyan style and Bahlian style. Both variants follow these basic rules:

  • The black piece moves first.
  • The white pieces must capture the black piece by surrounding it from two opposite sides.
  • The black piece may not move to the same position it was in the previous turn.
  • When the possibility of a repeating series of moves is apparent (usually after two turns of it happening), both players must try avoiding it.

Moyan style

In Moyan style, the black piece may win by leaving the board through one of the diamonds in the outer ring. The white pieces are forbidden from entering the outer ring.

Bahlian style

In Bahlian style, the black piece may win by successfully avoiding being captured in 20 turns. In this variant, the white pieces may enter the outer ring.
