Lhŭ fũm (桌戰 Bahlian: /ʎu˥ fũ˩˨/ "board battle") is an abstract strategy board game in the juhsung family originating from Bahl. The objective, like that of other games in this family, is to humble (checkmate) or bare the general.
Setup
Lhŭ fũm is played on an 8×8 board, with the players facing each other. The opposite first three ranks are reserved for the starting positions of the pieces. In order, from white's perspective:
- First rank: archer-chariot-sergeant-general-minister-sergeant-chariot-archer.
- Second rank: blank-flanker-blank-blank-blank-blank-flanker-blank.
- Third rank: populated entirely by soldiers.
Black's side is near-identical with the general and minister swapped so as to have both generals facing each other on the same file.
Rules
Pieces
General
The general (將 tăt) is the royal piece and moves one tile in any direction. It is decorated with the character for "butterfly" (蝶 re) on the white side and "crab" (蟹 put) on the black side.
Minister
The minister (士 tiăm) innovates on the juhsung minister by having it move hippogonally (one tile, then two tiles on a 90 degree angle) only straight forwards and backwards, or one tile diagonally. It is decorated with the characters for "minister."
Flanker
The flanker (翼 kak) moves one tile diagonally. It promotes to the marshal. It is decorated with a cross.
Sergeant
The sergeant (帥 gak) moves one tile orthogonally. It promotes to the marshal. It is decorated with a diamond.
Archer
The archer (箭 mung) moves up to two tiles diagonally. It is decorated with the character for "arrow."
Chariot
The chariot (車 rạm) moves up to two tiles orthogonally. It is decorated with the characters for "wheel."
Soldier
The soldier (兵 ngię) moves only one tile forward. Once it leaves its initial position, it may capture one tile along its rank. It promotes to the marshal. It is the only blank piece with no decorations, not counting the reverse.
Marshal
Once a small piece (sergeant, flanker, soldier) reaches the first rank of the enemy, it may be flipped over and promote to the marshal (官 piok), revealing a red circle on the reverse. It moves the same as the general, one tile in any direction.
