The Nene (Oxea pseudoalata), commonly referred to as organic stage nene to differentiate them from their fully abstracted modern relatives, were the original sophonts of planet Arai before they went extinct due to a viral global pandemic. What is known today about organic stage nene biology is based on what's recorded in the nene network. They were ammonia-based, nitrogen respirating, desert-dwelling organisms living in large subterranean "cities" for easy access to ammonia.

Name

Nene is Amari for "question" or "query," as the very survival of their species in their computer networks brings several questions about the true nature of sophonce to the forefront. Oxea instead comes from Amari oxia, a legendary creature comparable to a centaur with wings. Their hexadecimal tag in L1 is 2.

Appearance

Head

Nene had an elongated head with a tapering snout that drooped downwards. They possessed three pairs of eyes, usually blue or amber, lined in a row along the sides of their face. Between the frontmost pair of eyes, four chemoreceptive whiskers extended upwards. At the tip of their snout sat their mouth and a bunch of whiskers for use in feeling. Their nostrils were slit-shaped and located on their cheeks. Their ears are normally not visible, but are small holes behind their backmost pair of eyes.

Body

The body of a nene was stubby and short. They possessed six limbs: two front arms and four legs with small feet. On their backs sat two thermoregulatory structures resembling wings. Their bodies were covered in fur that was usually various shades of bluish grey.
