Arai is the second planet from star Melinoë. It is a hypernitrogenated HI1 planet, with molecular nitrogen (N2) making 99,5% of its atmospheric composition. Oxygen is not present in its atmosphere, and therefore the planet is completely uninhabitable to aerobic organisms. This is not a problem for araian life, as it makes use of anaerobic respiration. Its subsurface hydrosphere is comprised of ammonia (NH3) reserves and its surface is mostly comprised of silicate rock. It is the home planet of the Nene, both in their present form and their ancient organic stage.
Name
Arai is named after Earth musician Akino Arai, a frequent collaborator of Yoko Kanno, namesake of the urms' planet Kanno. The hexadecimal tag of Arai in the language of the modern nene, L1, is 1. In their ancient organic stage, nene called their home planet 15 in Ng-tone.
